Sailor pocket pens

Here are some of my Sailor pocket pens, in date order … or as accurately as I can achieve.

From 1960 – 1971 date codes were a 2-letter code stamped on the section.

From around 1971 Sailor started using a new 3-digit date code with the year as a single digit followed by a 2-digit month. They started putting this on the nib & the section in place of the old 2 letter date code but in around mid 1976 they stopped putting codes on the section, leaving them only on the nib.

This means that it can be difficult to know if a pen stamped, for example, “701” was made in 1977, 1987 or 1997. Obviously, if the section is stamped then it puts it in a tight year range (1971-76) but if you just have a nib stamp then you have to guess and I have erred on the side of assuming they are 1980s unless I can prove otherwise.

This pen has a nib marked “Gold from the Swiss Bank”. The story behind this runs that Pilot buy gold to make their own nibs and in one batch bought in the early 1970s they noticed that the bars were stamped as coming from a Swiss bank so they thought it would add extra kudos to the pens to mark that on the nibs.
